Pizza Fest – Chicago

Most people that tell you “Chicago is the greatest city in the world” usually refer to the summer months that play host to countless festivals all weekend long.  This summer got started off a bit early back in March, YES March is when we hit the 80 degree mark this year, and we are full blown in one of the hotest summers I can remember up to this point.  With the good weather, the Chicago summer festivals take over our lives.  We plan our weekends around them, our alternate routes, etc.  There really is something that every Chicagoan enjoys about being able to stand on a closed off street and drink.

Drink is a key word here, all of our festivals are really just excuses to get blasted.  Take for instance the Old Saint Pats festival, this is a festival revolving around one of the only churches in downtown to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and I have never seen so many Oui Oui or Lepercans porta toilets.  The literature festival in Printer’s Row theme… Get Lit!  If there is one thing that remains constant in Chicago, it is our undying commitment to alcohol, and these summer festivals are like a boost to that toddlin town.  So when I heard that Pizza Fest was coming back after a 3 year hiatus, I was quite excited and made sure another guide had the tour that day so I could go out there, enjoy, report, and drink some cocktails.

Lamest festival in Chicago :(

Not kidding, there were only 3 pizzerias, kudos to them for setting up and representing the pizza part of the festival BUT 3 ONLY?!?!?!?  WTF?  Seriously, WTF?  First off, props to Beggars Pizza, they lay it on thick, Caponies for bringing out a wood burning oven, and Georgio’s the only deep dish representation trucking it all the way in from Crystal Lake.  You 3 did your part, now where was the rest of the 2000+ pizzerias?  Was it a lack of organization, or do the pizza places just not care to get away from their daily grind and go outside for some grass root promoting?  Pizza Fest is an amazing vehicle for you to distinguish yourself to locals, much better than putting a menu on the fence outside people’s condos, and a major opportunity was missed.  Ok, no more complaining from me, here are some pics… the highlights of the pizza festival.  I’ll go again next time, but certainly not because I was impressed with this years’
